Fifteen Inch Milk Pan in Zinc Glaze
This is the largest milk pan, or mixing bowl, made by the Union Stoneware Company of Red Wing, measuring in at a hefty three gallon capacity. Covered in the white zinc oxide glaze, it has a pronounced shoulder and is made of thick, heavy, stoneware clay. The bottom of this milk pan is marked with the RWU 1 mold mark and states RED WING UNION STONEWARE CO. RED WING MINN. in a beautifully pronounced mark. This milk pan has several manufacturing effects, like clay bubbles, that are in demand because they give character to the piece. This very large milk pan is in fair condition with no cracks. It does have a flake on the upper rim that is nearly two inches long. it also has a few utensil marks from use, but these can be cleaned.
As soon as the Red Wing stoneware companies started making larger, utilitarian stoneware they made smaller stoneware pieces for use in the kitchen and on the table. The stoneware companies of Red Wing, Minnesota produced stoneware items shortly after their inception in 1877 until the mid-1940's. The shapes of these items ranged widely. However, one overriding attribute describes them all: they were designed to be used. In fulfilling the needs of a developing America, the stoneware companies were hugely successful and their wares were very popular. The popularity of their wares has only increased over time making collecting Red Wing a growing field and exciting hobby!
