This is a lid for a one gallon crock. It has the molded button and petal design and the "whiteware" (zinc oxide) glaze which date it to around 1897-1916 by the Red Wing Stoneware Company or the Red Wing Union Stoneware Company. The button handle has the number "1" molded into it. The lid also has a manufacturing effect, a clay bubble. that is so much in demand because it gives character to the piece.

This lid is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks.

Designed to fit on top of a crock, the lid has a flange on the bottom that fits inside the crock lip so that the lid does not easily tumble.

The stoneware companies of Red Wing, Minnesota produced stoneware items shortly after their inception in 1877 until the mid-1940's. The shapes of these items ranged widely. However, one overriding attribute describes them all: they were designed to be used. In fulfilling the needs of a developing America, the stoneware companies were hugely successful and their wares were very popular. The popularity of their wares has only increased over time making collecting Red Wing a growing field and exciting hobby!
