This is a jar used to preserve food by sealing a lid down to it using wax. It was a precursor to the canning jars that are much more commonly found.

This wax sealer was manufactured by the North Star Stoneware Company of Red Wing, Minnestoa between 1892 and 1896. It is marked by the highly treasured NS2-style mark on the bottom. This mark is in the shape of a star, with each point of the star holding the letters N, O, R, T and H.

This wax sealer is glazed in brown Albany slip and shows a few of the manufacturing effects of the 19th century, like glaze skips and bubbles and clay globules that are in such high demand because they give so much character to the piece.

This wax sealer does have a chip on the upper rim as can be seen in the pictures. The chip does not need to be very visible if it is turned to the back while on display. This wax sealer also has a small repair on the upper rim that is difficult to see even when you know that it is there.

North Star Stoneware Company was in production for only four years and that was over one hundred years ago. Their products are very uncommon and hard to find. This wax sealer has a fantastic bottom mark and it will look great in your display.

Homesteaders needed a way to preserve food and the stoneware companies of Red Wing produced just the products they needed. Some of these jars require wax to seal a lid against the jar. Others use metal clamps.

As soon as the Red Wing stoneware companies started making larger, utilitarian stoneware they made smaller stoneware pieces for use in the kitchen and on the table.

The stoneware companies of Red Wing, Minnesota produced stoneware items shortly after their inception in 1877 until the mid-1940's. The shapes of these items ranged widely. However, one overriding attribute describes them all: they were designed to be used. In fulfilling the needs of a developing America, the stoneware companies were hugely successful and their wares were very popular. The popularity of their wares has only increased over time making collecting Red Wing a growing field and exciting hobby!
