Gray Line Seven Inch Casserole With Advertising
This is a seven inch casserole from the Gray Line pattern of stoneware kitchenware. Also called Spongeband, this casserole has the characteristic red sponged line around the outside, bounded by two blue lines. This casserole is stamped with advertising on the interior bottom in blue ink. The advertising reads: MAKE OUR STORE
The bottom of this casserole is also stamped with the MADE IN RED WING RWU 3 blue ink stamp. This casserole was manufactured by Red Wing Union Stoneware Company between 1929 and 1936. This casserole is in very good condition, especially considering its age. There are no cracks, but there are a few very light crazing lines. The bottom side of the casserole does show a nearly invisible, small 3/8 inch flake on the bottom edge.
Gray Line was Red Wing Union Stoneware Company's first line of kitchenware. It offered several shapes of containers, casseroles, pitchers, mugs and other useful tools, all with the distinctive red and blue sponged band decoration. Because of this decoration, the line is sometimes called "sponged band" or "spongeband." As soon as the Red Wing stoneware companies started making larger, utilitarian stoneware they made smaller stoneware pieces for use in the kitchen and on the table. The stoneware companies of Red Wing, Minnesota produced stoneware items shortly after their inception in 1877 until the mid-1940's. The shapes of these items ranged widely. However, one overriding attribute describes them all: they were designed to be used. In fulfilling the needs of a developing America, the stoneware companies were hugely successful and their wares were very popular. The popularity of their wares has only increased over time making collecting Red Wing a growing field and exciting hobby!
