Three Gallon Crock Bar Petal Lid in Zinc Glaze
This is a lid for a three gallon crock. It has the molded bar and petal design and the "whiteware" (zinc oxide) glaze which date it to the early 1900's by the Red Wing Union Stoneware Company. One of the molded petals has the number "3" molded into it. The lid also has a few of the manufacturing effects like clay separations and clay bubbles that are so much in demand because they give character to the piece. This lid also shows some "kiln burn," a highly desired effect which turns the otherwise very white glaze to a light brown because of the high heat of the kiln. A very special feature of this lid is a 'turkey dropping,' which is a globule of darkened glaze which dripped onto the lid during firing. Turkey droppings are not commonly found on zinc glazed stoneware but really add to the beauty and character of the ware. This lid is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The bottom flange of this lid is slightly rough because of a few very minor flakes which may be manufacturing effects rather than damage. There is also a slight depression on one edge which was created during manufacturing because it is under the glaze, and is not damage. Designed to fit on top of a crock, the lid has a flange on the bottom that fits inside the crock lip so that the lid does not easily tumble.
The stoneware companies of Red Wing, Minnesota produced stoneware items shortly after their inception in 1877 until the mid-1940's. The shapes of these items ranged widely. However, one overriding attribute describes them all: they were designed to be used. In fulfilling the needs of a developing America, the stoneware companies were hugely successful and their wares were very popular. The popularity of their wares has only increased over time making collecting Red Wing a growing field and exciting hobby!
